'Enrichment
Day' is looked forward to by pupils and staff alike. Once a fortnight
the usual curriculum is suspended as children enjoy a day filed with
numerous activities designed to further their knowledge, understanding
and enjoyment of the sporting and creative curriculum. Children are
taught by specialist teachers and also by our talented team of teaching
assistants. They may work in small groups or s a whole class, depending
on the nature of the activity.
Our
annual parent survey delivered a 100% positive endorsement of 'enrichment
days'
.thumbs up for our innovative and valued programme.

French
On
Thursdays all the children in key stage 2 participate in French
lessons of between 30 and 40 minutes.
Lessons
are stimulating, enjoyable and challenging. Speaking and listening
have a prominent role in our sessions, as do songs and rhymes,
which help the children focus on their pronunciation.
A
current favourite song is ' Tete, épaules, genoux, pieds.'
(Head, shoulders, knees and toes). The children also learn about
the traditions and culture of France and enjoy listening to
French storybooks.

ICT
I
take years 3, 4,5 and 6 for ICT. During the year all year groups
work on a variety of practical skills including changing typeface,
cutting and pasting, Internet searching and creative work. Using
these skills we produce a variety of projects including greeting
cards, wrapping paper and CD DVD covers. The children also test
their skills in an Internet quiz; compose their own music and
produce presentations and spreadsheets.
I
enjoy working with the children on these projects and seeing
their ICT skills grow whilst they have a great time in the ICT
suite!

PE
and Sport
The
children take part in a variety of activities and they experience
a broad spectrum of sport throughout the year.
We
work on developing all the fundamental skills that we need to
have a go at any sport. (Movement, catching, throwing, sending,
receiving) and we look at the tactics and principles required
in sport for attacking and defending. The children also take
part in a variety of specific sports.
Athletics,
gymnastics and dance are also experienced giving the children
the freedom to explore the principles and ideas to express themselves
through their movement.
Emphasis
is on participation and fun, whilst also providing those who
want to take their PE to another level the opportunity to excel.

Music
Every
child in both key stage 1 and 2 has access to a comprehensive
range of tuned and untuned percussion, which is used widely
during enrichment sessions. Key stage 1 classes develop basis
beat and rhythmic work and learn to follow simple notation.
Key stage 2 pupils study more complex rhythms and begin to understand
and use harmonic structures. From year 4 onwards children are
encouraged to bring their own instruments to the sessions to
be part of a class ensemble, with every child in the class participating
in music making. Those more able musicians have an opportunity
to be part of the school orchestra, which is held every lunchtime
during enrichment days.

Dance
I
deliver creative dance and movement to years 4, 5 and 6 and
run an after school club to a mixed age group.
The
children learn to perform basic body actions, dance routines
and an awareness of space, time, dynamics, speed and weight.
The
children get the opportunity to express themselves through a
creative process and explore a diverse range of themes and ideas,
developing skills that are cross curricular and transferable
to other learning environments. This includes repeating and
linking movement phrases, working in groups and as a soloist,
performance and audience skills.
The
sessions are energetic and fun and cover areas of health and
well-being.

Cooking
- Key Stage 1
I
take years 1,2 and 3 for cookery every other week. These sessions
are kept as healthy as possible explaining the importance of
nutrition and healthy living and eating to the children as well
as being enjoyable.
The
sessions are very much hand on and most weeks they are able
to take home what they have made plus a recipe sheet to encourage
them to make it at home. All of the children help to wash and
wipe up at the end of each session.
I very much enjoy these sessions as I think that all children
need to learn the basic skills in cooking through primary/secondary
school life.

Cooking
- Key Stage 2
I
take years 4,5 and 6 for cookery sessions once a fortnight.
During the sessions the children practice various cooking skills
such as chopping, stirring, rubbing in, rolling etc. Each session
also incorporates literacy and numeracy skills. The children
work in small groups of between 7 and 9 and receive a recipe
and fact sheet associated with the week's recipe. They also
take home a sample of what they have made that day.
We
make a mixture of both savoury and sweet dished during each
term, all of which contain healthy ingredients. E.g. banana
muffins containing fresh bananas and oat bran - yummy!
The
children get an opportunity to help clear away and help with
the washing up and when the recipe has been complicated; the
children have the opportunity to complete a fun worksheet. These
worksheets are either linked to the subject of food/food preparation
or linked to a particular event for example Christmas or Easter.
Whilst
the sessions are great fun and enjoyed by both the children
and myself, there is a serious side to them. The children learn
about health and safety in the kitchen, including hygiene procedures.
A particular achievement for me personally is to hear that the
children have been encouraged to make the recipes at home and
very much enjoyed doing so.

Sewing
- Key Stage 1
These
are some of the projects that have been worked on with key stage
1 children.
Year
1 - have been making bookmarks starting with easy stitching,
as some of the children have never sewn before. We then progress
to sewing tortoises or puppets (other projects have included
gingerbread men)
Year
2 - have created felt Christmas decorations to hang on the tree
and after Christmas they sew fish mobiles.
Year
3 - to coincide with their Egyptian project we are embroidering
a facemask of King Tutankhamen on calico. We also produce a
panel of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Much
of the children work is displayed around the school before being
taken home.

Sewing
- Key Stage 2
I
work with years 3, 4 and 5 every other week. We cover threading
needles and have learnt the basic running and back stitch. This
is then put into practice by stitching patterns on calico cloth.
We have also made button pictures and designed and made purses.
These
sessions are enjoyable and the children gain confidence and
self esteem from producing their own piece of work.

Art
- Key Stage 1
I
take years 1, 2 and 3 for art enrichment. In the autumn term
we tend to work on mark making and drawing skills. In the spring
term we look at painting, collage and textures and in the summer
term we develop our knowledge and skills with clay work. As
I only work with half the class at one time, there is plenty
of scope to use a variety of media and artistic styles.

Art
- Key Stage 2
I
take years 4,5 and 6 for art enrichment. The children learn
how to use a variety of mediums and techniques. We study the
styles of different artists and their work ranging from Pop
art to traditional oriental art.
So
far this year the children have produced primary colour patterns,
colour wheels, observational drawings of autumn flora and bonfire
collages.
At
the moment the children are working on their own versions of
L.S. Lowry paintings.
In
the New Year they will have the opportunity to make Chinese
dragon puppets, fantasy collages and try their hand at tie dying.
These creative sessions are enjoyable for both the children
and myself.
